I use Honeychild nappies, I have a great friend who is currently making her own nappies for her children and I think they are awesome! I was wondering if anyone has made nappies before, I went to that site www.greenbeans.co.nz they have DIY kits to make nappies, I wonder how hard it would be? I mean I have sewn before, but you know just your basic stuff... Anyone else attempted to DIY nappies?

I haven't but know plenty of people who have.  Some of them hadn't sewn anything since school and didn't find it too difficult.

I'm thinking of dusting off my hand-me-down ancient sewing machine and having a go at making some for the new baby.

I've tried all kinds of MCN's - Fuzzi Bunz, Honey Child, PikoBaby, Tweedle, Wigglebums, BumGenius, Monkey Doodlez, Mommy's Touch, Peapods, Real Nappies, Swaddlebees, Bubblebubs, DryBees, and probably more that I've forgotten.  Some of them just didn't work on Ethan (he's long with skinny legs) but others have been great.

Then he started reacting to the microfleece lining that's in most nappies - so we shifted to 100% natural fibre fitted nappies and either PUL covers or wool covers.  And as I found it hard to find much available in NZ I started bringing some in myself to sell through my website!  So we now use Bubba J, Little Beetle, Baby Greens Diaper Co. and also have in our stash some Wigglebums pockets that have a cotton velour lining and some Bubblebubs AIO's which have a bamboo lining.

I agree it can get annoying stuffing pockets after a while - most of our stash are the fitteds, we have five AIO's which are easy too, and just three pockets.

Do you have a pattern you were thinking of using to make your own, or were you going to play around and create your own pattern?  I haven't started sussing out a pattern yet but might get onto it soon.  I won some fabric in the Great Down Under Nappy Hunt last year so have that to get started with but will need to get some hemp and/or bamboo for the absorbent part.

I will have a look at ur website.. i am a caregiver and i was looking after this client the other week who uses only natural organic fitted nappies on her son, with wool covers, her son had a big sore on his bum i am not sure if it was from them or not but she had put him in organic disposiables for a while until it cleared... theres no way i could afford organic disposiables! Although if i could i would use them, i am all for being better for the environment etc... I use only ecostore to wash all my nappies in.

I actually dont know what i am going to use as a pattern!! my friend whos making her own at the moment invited me to come over oneday while the kids are in daycare to make nappies with her,, i know its cost her alot to set up everything.,. she brought alot of the stuff from greenbeans.. even the machine to put the domes on is like $100! or maybe more...Anyway i was just thinking of using a kit from greenbeans..

hey hannahjade, do u have any ideas on how you want to make your nappys? What do you use at the moment?
I use honeychild.. i feel sorry for my babys though coz at night time they have to have 3liners in them to keep them from getting soaked,, they can hardly walk. and waddle along to bed, its quiet funny!!
Are you into organic fibres or doesnt it matteR?

Well I went and bought some fabric in the greenbeans sale - some hemp jersey, hemp terry, bamboo fleece, bamboo velour and some lime green pul. Oh and some snaps.  Still need to buy some elastic though!!

I have a friend with a snap press so she'll put the snaps on for me.

I have a pattern to try too.  I've only gotten as far as pre-washing the fabric so far so once I manage to get more done I"ll  let you know :0)  Everything has wound to a grinding halt here as me and my son have been really sick the last few weeks with nasty chest / sinus / ear infections and one of my ear drums perforated - sooooo sore!!  We're working hard to get rid of the last of the bugs this week and hope to get back to normal activities again next week *fingers crossed*

YanaIjasMum I don't think the sore your friends boy had would have been caused by the natural fibre nappies.  My son is in natural fibres and doesn't have any trouble.  He did have a staph infection a while back but that wasn't nappy related.

I use raw silk liners which help to wick the moisture away from his skin and into the nappy, and make sure that his nappies are changed regularly - at least 3 hrly during the day (or right away for a number 2 of course :0)

Yeah well i wonder if it was because Daycare seemed to have not changed his nappy in a longtime...
She uses those natural eco friendly liners from the organic shop..
The rash is all gone now, but it was pretty bad and she was using anti fungal cream on it...
What brand of nappies do you use?
I am a not really liking my honeychilds at the moment.. I find if my girls are in them overnight they have a huge rash in the morning..
Where did you get your silk liners from?

I make all my kids nappies, the hard part is just finding a pattern that you like!

I use a OSFA pattern :)
